Welcome!

The purpose of this website is to assist people who are studying the meaning and writing of the kanji (japanese characters) following James W. Heisig's method called "Remembering the Kanji".

Review with Sebastian Leitner's flashcard system, which helps you focus on the difficult kanji and repeat less of those that you remember well.

Share mnemonics and hints with other members. Feeling stuck? Get inspiration for creating memorable stories and take care of the troublesome kanji!

It hope this website can help to see you through the end of RTK Volume 1 and keep track of your goal. I hope you will find it useful and wish you the best success in your kanji studies !

Kanji poster update27 May 2008
Paddy let me know that he updated the Kanji Poster site with the Mighty Kanji T Shirt. A fitting name I guess with over 2000 kanji on it! There are also T Shirts with the Kanji Poster mascot.

Site updates

Reviewing the Kanji has not been updated in a while and I apologize for that. I need to find concrete ways to fund myself to develop the site further without sacrificing all my personal time on it. More on this later..

A review of James W. Heisig's Remembering the Kanji5 May 2008
Member snispilbor (aka the "Glowing Face Man") wrote a great review of James Heisig's Remembering the Kanji, Volume 1.

Snispilbor's review includes some good explanations of the mnemonic method, the type of memory used, and also rebuttals to common criticisms of RtK. Last but not least it's quite humorous too :
The sexiest, most badass script in the known universe?
This is a great review for people who are new to the book as well as for learners who've embarked on the journey and in difficult moments wonder what this is all about! ;-)

Thank you!15 April 2008
I've been meaning to post this in a long while...

I am very grateful and thankful for the donations you've sent me last year and which I continue to receive to this day. They definitely keep me going. Also special thanks to those hardy souls who have chosen the recurring donation and have been supporting me, some of you even since February 2007 (you know who you are).

Thank you! ありがとう!

Current plans

Updates have slowed down lately because I am currently in the process of rewriting all the site's code into something more manageable. Basically, lots of behind the scenes programming which doesn't have any direct visible changes.

However on the long run I think it will make a lot of difference. It will make it easier for me to do quicker updates. And it will simply make possible things that had become too complicated to develop or maintain in my spare time.

Minor fixes to the last Study area additions22 February 2008
- "All my stories" list now uses regular links instead of Javascript, so the browser shortcuts like shift-click and middle mousebutton/mousewheel click should work as expected (the last two are used to open a link in a new window, or in a new tab)

- Fixed a minor sorting issue with Last Edited date (thanks Katsuo!)

- On Safari browser : fixed font style in the Review page, Study page and All My Stories list, to display the intended "Mincho" typeface instead of the thick, "Gothic" typeface.
A poster with kanji on it18 February 2008
It looks like we have a new mascot at Reviewing the Kanji! The kanji literate rodent is the creation of member paddy71 (aka Paddy Duddy) who got in touch with me about his kanji business idea www.kanjiposter.com :

"I came up with the idea of making a poster with all the kanji I was learning on it so I could stare at it while sitting at the office (I work in the graphic design and print industry). Then I decided to laminate it so I could write on it with a dry erase marker."

I couldn't resist posting paddy's detailed instructions for "How to Use the Kanji Poster" :

How to Use the Kanji Poster - A Detailed Look

I really like the ad and I thought it could be useful to learners out there. I actually looked for one myself when I was studying RtK, but had no luck back then. Here's to kanjiposter's success! It is the year of the mouse (okay, rat) in Japan, after all ;)
